Top Tips From One Of Our Favourite Summer Weddings

Hosting a wedding can seem daunting at first. The endless choices on offer can make life difficult, either we want everything or a hybrid of different ideas to make the day as special as possible. Personality can come from something small perfectly pitched, to having an outrageous theme that is the heartbeat of the day.

In the Summer of 2019 we were lucky enough to help James and Olive with their special day. Join us as we show you some of the stand out features of the day which made it a success.

Venue

After tying the knot at Hampton Court James and Olive wanted an intimate outside venue for 120 people. Enter one of our favourites, A Field Affair. Nestled in the Surrey countryside, A Field affair has it all. Circled by oak trees and accessed by stepping over a stream, this dream venue is less than an hour from South London. Mark, the owner, even has an outside pizza oven to supply your guests with a late night slice or two.

Theme

James and Olive decided they wanted their day to revolve around their love of books. This theme worked well because it allowed for great personal touches. From curving book towers for their guests to walk past on arrival, to flowers made from pages we loved the detail. Getting involved in the planning was great fun, nothing was off limits! James' chosen author was Terry Pratchett, if you look closely at some of the images you will see Diskworld table numbers. If geeking out isn't cool, then count us out the cool crew, this is always one of our go to coolest wedding additions.

Menu Design

Having a menu that represents the theme of the day with hand picked drinks enriches the experience of any event. Here at The Drunken Jockeys menu design is always close to our hearts and is one of the ways we really add value. No drink is off the cards and we are always more than happy to help our clients craft their perfect menu.

If glassware is unavailable, we recommend fresh seasonal choices, such as Pimms, Tom Collins or a Mint Bourbon Smash. These types of choices are diverse in flavour and don't rely on a special glassware serve. Alternatively, if glassware is a possibility, a Strawberry Daiquiri, Pornstar Martini or Flaming Rum Punch always goes down a treat. We recommend tweaking the name to match your theme to make things extra special.

Garden Games

It's long been known that people relax and interact better whilst participating in joint tasks or games, especially the boys before they have had a couple! James and Olive had Giant Jenga, a family game called Kubb, as well as the option to add vintage croquet and a 1940's vintage boules set. When combined with hay bales, blankets and a fire pit we had a recipe for success.

Bars

The next stop is choosing the perfect bar. With so many choices it can be hard to know where to start. For some people it's a Prosecco cart, for others it could be an ice cream van serving nothing but Strawberry Daiquiris. One of the most important aspects when choosing a bar supplier is trust. Bar suppliers should add to the experience of your day, providing a great bar is only one aspect. Advising and handling glass-hire, music and staffing options are but a few of the ways a good supplier can make organising your day easier.

For James and Olive we decided to use Arabella and The Pulling Station to enhance the boho feeling. Both bars have a great rustic aesthetic and offered James and Olive the freedom to have kegs on tap, as well as a fully equipped cocktail bar.

We believe that one of the most important aspects of an event is the staff. For James and Olive's special day we had a team of six to ensure the hosts didn't have to lift a finger and we had the ability to pay special attention to those who needed it. Whether it was making sure flutes stayed filled during speeches, water gets to those in need or simply plates are cleared without delay our staff had it covered. Having the right team can never be underestimated and it can be the difference between a good experience and a great one!
